Money for Your Junk: How to Sell on Facebook and Create Extra Retirement Cash Flow

accounting charity tips & tricks Feb 23, 2026

Friend, most of us have way too much stuff — especially if you’re staging multiple short-term rental units like I do. That extra furniture, décor, appliances, and “just in case” items take up space, cost you money to store, and add unnecessary stress to your life.

Why keep holding onto things you rarely use when they could be putting real money in your pocket right now? That extra cash can go straight toward catching up on retirement savings, paying down debt, or building the legacy you want to leave.

I’ve learned to draw a clear line: I only keep consumables and true spares. Everything else is either sold, donated, or given away. As good stewards, we want to use what God has given us wisely — not let it clutter our homes, garages, or storage units.

Why Facebook Is One of the Best Places to Sell Your Stuff

You’ve probably done yard sales or used Craigslist, but Facebook Marketplace and local sales groups can move your items faster and reach more people — often for free. In many areas, even smaller towns have active “yard sale” or “buy/sell” groups with thousands of members. Your item can get dozens of eyes on it within 24 hours.

Practical Tips to Sell Successfully on Facebook

  1. Find the right local groups. Search for “yard sale,” “buy/sell/trade,” or “[your town] marketplace” groups. Join the most active ones and read their rules carefully before posting.
  2. Follow the group rules. Some require clear photos, others give the first person who comments “claimed” priority, and many have rules about how often you can bump a post. Respect the rules — it keeps you in good standing and helps things run smoothly.
  3. Take clear, well-lit photos. Good lighting and sharp focus make a big difference. Show the item from several angles so buyers know exactly what they’re getting. If you struggle with pictures, ask a friend or family member to help.
  4. Post at the right time. Notice when people in the group are most active — usually evenings or weekends — but avoid times when everyone else is posting. You want your items to stand out, not get buried.
  5. Write an honest, clear description. Be upfront about the condition. If you need it gone the same day, say so in the post. If the group allows 48 hours for pickup, you can add your own tighter timeline to avoid problems.
  6. Be responsive and available. Interested buyers will have questions. Keep your phone handy and reply quickly. People move on fast if they don’t hear back.
  7. Stay organized. When you have several items for sale, keep a simple list or sticky note for each one with the buyer’s name, phone number, agreed price, and pickup details. It prevents mix-ups and stress.

What to Do with What Doesn’t Sell

If an item doesn’t sell after a couple of weeks, consider donating it. Your LLC or business can often write off donations as a tax deduction. It’s almost always better to get rid of clutter and receive some tax benefit than to keep paying to store things you don’t need.

The Real Benefit for Your Retirement

Every dollar you make selling unused items is money that can work harder for your future — whether it goes into savings, a Solo 401(k), real estate, or creating more reliable cash flow. Clearing out the clutter also gives you peace of mind and more physical space to focus on what matters most: family, faith, and building the legacy you want to leave.

Many of us over 50 are finally in a season where we can simplify. Selling on Facebook is a simple, free way to turn “junk” into cash that supports your retirement rescue plan.

You don’t have to do it all at once. Start with one closet, one garage corner, or one storage unit. Small, consistent actions add up faster than you expect.
