Praying with Your Grandchildren: One of the Most Important Legacies You Can Leave
Friend, in the busyness of business, rentals, and retirement planning, it’s easy to forget that some things matter even more than our work. One of the most beautiful gifts you can give your grandchildren is a joyful, natural relationship with Jesus — the kind where they feel comfortable talking to Him about anything.
As grandparents, we have a special opportunity. We can create sweet memories and plant seeds of faith that can bless them for the rest of their lives — and even into the next generation.
Let me share a story that still makes me smile.
Five-year-old Jason was terrified of putting his face in the water during swimming lessons. That night he prayed earnestly, asking Jesus to help him. His parents weren’t at the lesson the next day, but when Mom picked him up, Jason jumped in the car and said, “Let’s hurry home so I can tell Jesus I put my face in the water!”
His mom smiled and replied, “Let’s tell Him right now.”
That simple moment turned fear into faith and created a memory of God’s faithfulness. You can create moments like that with your own grandchildren.
Practical Ways to Pray with Your Grandchildren
Here are seven simple, heartfelt steps that fit naturally into grandparent life:
- Let them see you pray. Grandchildren learn by watching. Pray out loud before meals, thank God for the food and the hands that prepared it, and invite them to share one thing they’re thankful for that day.
- End the day with prayer together. When they stay over or during visits, take a few quiet minutes before bed. Thank God for the fun they had, the people they love, and anything they learned. Ask what they need help with — school, friends, a fear they’re facing — and model simple prayers for help.
- Pray for healing and comfort. Bumps, scrapes, and hurt feelings happen. Gather everyone and pray for God’s healing touch. One powerful prayer is asking the Lord to give each child all the love they needed that day but didn’t fully receive.
- Teach them to ask for forgiveness. When cross words or mistakes happen (and they will), gently guide them to say, “Jesus, please forgive me for being unkind.” Model it yourself — “Jesus, please forgive me for losing my patience.” This builds tender hearts.
- Use short, simple prayers. Search for “simple prayers for children” and you’ll find many sweet options. As they grow, teach them the Lord’s Prayer or favorite Bible verses they can pray on their own.
- Read children’s books about prayer together. There are wonderful books that make talking to God fun and relatable. Curl up with one during visits — it becomes a treasured tradition.
- Send them off with a blessing. Before they head home or back to school, place your hand on their shoulder or head and speak a short blessing over them. It reminds them that God is with them all day, every day.
The Legacy This Creates
Teaching your grandchildren to pray isn’t complicated — it flows naturally when you have an active prayer life yourself. These small moments build something far more valuable than any financial inheritance: a living faith they can carry into their own adulthood, marriage, and parenting years.
As we talk about in Retirement Rescue, true legacy includes more than cash flow and assets. It’s stewarding the faith, values, and relationship with Christ that we pass to the next generation. When your grandchildren learn they can bring every fear, joy, and need to Jesus, you’ve given them a gift that brings peace long after you’re gone.
You don’t have to be perfect. Just consistent and loving. Start where you are — even five minutes of prayer together can plant seeds that grow for decades.
